Getting a Marriage License in Lake Charles

Both people getting married must appear in person at the Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court to apply for a marriage license. You cannot send a representative. You cannot mail in your application. Both parties must be present at the same time with their documents.

The fee is $32.50. Bring cash, check, or money order made out to the Clerk of Court. Credit cards may not be accepted at all clerk windows, so it is best to bring cash or a check to avoid any issues on the day you visit. The fee is due at the time you apply.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued in any Louisiana parish is valid statewide. You do not have to live in Calcasieu Parish or in Lake Charles to get your license here. It is valid for ceremonies performed anywhere in Louisiana. The license is good for 30 days from the date it is issued. If you do not use it within that window, it expires and you must apply again.

Louisiana requires a 72-hour waiting period between the time the license is issued and when the ceremony can take place. This is set out in R.S. 9:241. You cannot get married the same day you apply. Plan your timeline with the full three days in mind. In some limited situations a judge can waive the wait under R.S. 9:242, but this is not standard. Do not count on it unless you have a compelling reason and a judge willing to grant it.

Note: The 72-hour rule starts when the license is issued, not when you first contact the office.

Lake Charles Marriage License Requirements

Arriving without the right documents will delay your application. The clerk cannot process your license if anything is missing. Both parties need to have their paperwork in order before you go to the office.

Each person must bring a valid government-issued photo ID. A driver's license or state-issued ID card works. Each person also needs a certified birth certificate. A regular photocopy is not enough. It must be the certified version with the official seal. You also need Social Security numbers for both parties, along with each person's parents' names and birthplaces, including the mother's maiden name.

If you or your partner were married before, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. That means a certified copy of the final divorce decree or the death certificate of a former spouse. Louisiana law under R.S. 9:225 requires this before a new license can be issued. This step catches a lot of people off guard. If it applies to you, get that document before your visit. Make sure it is a certified copy, not a regular printout or a photocopy of the original.

Applicants who are 16 or 17 years old need parental consent. No one under 16 can be issued a marriage license in Louisiana. Same-sex marriages are issued on the same terms as all other licenses in Calcasieu Parish.

Louisiana Marriage Record Resources

Several state-level resources are available to help you search for or obtain marriage records tied to Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish.

The Louisiana Clerks Remote Access Authority (LCRAA) portal provides broader statewide access to court records. If you are not sure which parish holds the record you need, this system can help you narrow it down. Marriage license indexes from Calcasieu Parish may appear here alongside records from other parishes.

The Louisiana State Archives holds older vital records and historical marriage documents. If you are looking for a record from many decades back, the archives may have it when the parish clerk does not. Their holdings go back to the 1800s in some parishes. For Lake Charles, historical records from the early twentieth century may be found there.

The Louisiana Department of Health issues certified copies of marriage certificates for events that took place after 1946. The health department certificate is a shorter document. It confirms the marriage happened but does not include the full license application details. Both the clerk copy and the health department copy have their uses depending on what you need the document for.
