Concordia Parish Marriage Records History

Concordia Parish has one of the longer marriage record histories in central Louisiana. The collection goes back to 1846. The Louisiana State Archives holds two distinct sets of materials from this parish: marriage records from 1846 to 1914, and a separate index to marriages covering 1846 to 1941. Both are available to researchers through the archives system in Baton Rouge.

If you are doing genealogy research or trying to find a record from the 1800s or early 1900s, the archives is the right place to start. They have cataloged and digitized a portion of these older materials, and some can be searched through their online portal. For records that are not yet digitized, you may need to visit in person or submit a written request.

The Louisiana State Archives at sos.la.gov holds the Concordia Parish historical marriage collection and allows researchers to search records going back to the 1840s.

Getting a Marriage License in Concordia Parish

Both parties must appear in person at the Clerk of Court office to apply. You cannot mail in an application or send someone else in your place. Both people must be there at the same time with their documents. If anything is missing, the clerk cannot issue the license and you will need to come back.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued in any Louisiana parish is valid statewide. So you can get your license in Concordia Parish even if you live elsewhere or plan to hold your ceremony in another parish. The license is good for 30 days from the date of issue. After 30 days it expires, and you must start over with a new application and pay the fee again.

Concordia Parish applies a 72-hour waiting period before the license goes into effect. Under R.S. 9:241, this wait starts at the time of issuance. A judge can waive the period in certain circumstances under R.S. 9:242, but that requires a separate request and is not automatic. Plan your ceremony date with the three-day gap in mind. Most couples do not qualify for a waiver, so build the time into your schedule.

The fee for a Concordia Parish marriage license runs approximately $27.50 to $32. Confirm the exact amount by calling (318) 336-4204 before your visit. Pay by cash, check, or money order made payable to the Clerk of Court. Certified copies of your marriage record cost extra if you need them later.

Documents Required for a Concordia Marriage License

The clerk cannot issue a license without the right paperwork from both parties. Come prepared to avoid a second trip. Here is what each applicant must bring to the Concordia Parish Clerk of Court.

Each person needs a valid, government-issued photo ID. A driver's license or state ID card is fine. You also need a certified birth certificate for each applicant. A regular photocopy will not work. It must be an original certified document from the vital records office that issued it. You need your Social Security numbers as well. The clerk will also ask for both parents' names and birthplaces for each applicant, along with the mother's maiden name.

If either party was previously married, you must show proof the prior marriage ended. Bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of a former spouse. Louisiana law under R.S. 9:225 requires this documentation before a new license can be issued. Do not skip this step if it applies to you. Missing this document is one of the most common reasons the clerk has to turn an applicant away.

Applicants between 16 and 17 years old need both parents to sign the application. No one under 16 may get a marriage license in Louisiana. The minor must provide proof of age, and both parents must either be present or provide notarized written consent.
