Getting a Marriage License in Rapides Parish

Both parties must appear in person to apply for a marriage license in Rapides Parish. You cannot send someone else, and you cannot apply online. Both people must be present at the same time with all required documents. As the Clerk of Court notes: "A license may be issued in any parish, regardless of which parish the ceremony is to be performed or where the parties reside" under R.S. 9:222.

The fee for a marriage license in Rapides Parish is $27.50 by cash or $28.05 by credit card. The difference covers the card processing cost. As the clerk's office states, fees are non-refundable. Pay by cash if you want to avoid the small upcharge. The license is valid throughout Louisiana for 30 days from the issue date. If you let it expire, you apply again and pay again.

There is a 24-hour waiting period in Rapides Parish between the time the license is issued and when the ceremony can happen. That is shorter than in some other Louisiana parishes. Under R.S. 9:241, the waiting period is required statewide, though the exact duration can vary. In Rapides, you only need to wait one day, not three. That gives you more flexibility when planning your ceremony date.

The Rapides Parish marriage license page covers specific requirements, what to bring, and any updates to the process.

Documents Required for Rapides Marriage Records

Both applicants must bring valid photo ID to the clerk's office. A driver's license or state-issued ID card is the standard. You also need a certified birth certificate for each person. A copy will not work. The clerk needs the certified original or a certified copy from the issuing state. Social Security numbers are also required. The clerk records both parents' names, birthplaces, and the mother's maiden name for each applicant.

If either person has been married before, you must prove the prior marriage ended. A certified divorce decree works. So does a death certificate if the former spouse passed away. Do not leave this document at home if it applies to your situation. The clerk cannot issue a new license without it. This rule applies across Louisiana under state law.

Anyone under 18 who wants to apply must meet additional requirements. Persons between 16 and 17 need parental consent. Both parents must be present or provide notarized written consent. No one under 16 can marry in Louisiana under any circumstances.

Rapides Parish offers one of the most accessible online record search tools in the state through RAPID E-Search. As the Clerk of Court describes it: "We hope you find our online resource, RAPID E-Search, to be an easy and convenient way of accessing the information needed from your home or office." Louisiana Marriage Record Resources

Several state-level tools can support your Rapides Parish record search. The Louisiana State Archives holds historical vital records and older marriage documents that may not be in the clerk's online system. For research going back several generations, the archives can fill gaps. The Louisiana Department of Health issues certified marriage certificates for events after 1946. That certificate is a shorter document than the full clerk record. It confirms a marriage took place but does not include the full license application details.
