West Carroll Parish Marriage License Process

To get a marriage license in West Carroll Parish, you apply at the Clerk of Court office in Oak Grove. Both applicants must bring valid photo identification. A driver's license, state-issued ID, or passport works. Certified birth certificates for both parties are also required. The clerk does not accept plain copies. The birth certificate must carry an official seal from the issuing agency.

Louisiana law requires a waiting period between when the license is issued and when the ceremony can take place. Under R.S. 9:222, a license from West Carroll Parish is valid anywhere in Louisiana. So if your ceremony is in another parish, your license still works. The license is good for 30 days. If you do not use it within that time, it expires.

If either party was previously married, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified divorce decree or the death certificate of a former spouse satisfies this under R.S. 9:241. The clerk will ask for this before issuing the license. Come prepared with it if it applies to you.

You also need your Social Security number and the names and birthplaces of both parents, including the mother's maiden name for each applicant. To save time, marriage license applications can be filled out online through eClerksLA.com before your visit. You still need to come in person to finalize and pay, but pre-filling the application speeds up the process.

Note: Minor applicants aged 16 to 17 need parental consent. No one younger than 16 may receive a marriage license under Louisiana law.
