Getting a Marriage License Near Prairieville

Prairieville residents apply for a marriage license at the Ascension Parish Clerk of Court in Gonzales. Both parties must appear in person. You cannot apply by mail or online. Bring all required documents and the correct fee on the day you visit.

The fee is $32.50. Bring cash or a check payable to the Clerk of Court. Confirm accepted payment methods when you call ahead, as options can change. The fee is due at the time of application. Certified copies of the marriage record are a separate cost if you need them.

Under R.S. 9:222, a marriage license from Ascension Parish is valid statewide. You do not need to live in Ascension Parish to apply here. The license is good for ceremonies anywhere in Louisiana and is valid for 30 days from issuance. After 30 days, it expires and you must reapply.

Louisiana law at R.S. 9:241 requires a 72-hour waiting period between the time the license is issued and the ceremony. You cannot get married the same day you apply. The wait begins when the clerk issues the license. A judge can waive the waiting period under R.S. 9:242 in certain cases, but this requires a formal request and is not guaranteed.

Ascension Parish only requires one party to apply for the license in some cases. Call the clerk ahead of your visit at (225) 621-8400 to confirm current requirements for your situation.

Note: The marriage license is valid in Louisiana only. It cannot be used for a ceremony in another state.

Prairieville Marriage License Requirements

Go through this list before heading to the Gonzales office. Missing items mean a second trip.

Each applicant needs a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or state ID card. You also each need a certified birth certificate with an official seal or stamp. A photocopy or printed copy is not acceptable. Bring your Social Security numbers and the full names and birthplaces of both parents, including the mother's maiden name. The clerk enters this information into the marriage record.

If either person was married before, you must bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of a former spouse satisfies this requirement under R.S. 9:225. This is not an optional step. Bring the certified version, not a standard printout. The clerk will not accept anything less.
