Under R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued in Allen Parish is valid for use in any Louisiana parish. The license is good for 30 days from the date it is issued. If you do not use it within 30 days, you have to apply again and pay again. Plan your ceremony date before you apply so the timing works.

Louisiana law under R.S. 9:241 requires a waiting period between the time the license is issued and the time of the ceremony. The wait can be 24 to 72 hours depending on the parish. A judge can waive the waiting period under R.S. 9:242 in specific situations. Contact the clerk office to ask about the current wait time for Allen Parish before you make plans.

Both applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply without parental involvement. If one person is 16 or 17, both parents must give consent. No one under 16 may receive a marriage license in Louisiana.

What to bring when you apply:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID for each person
  • Certified birth certificate for each person
  • Social Security numbers for both parties
  • Parents' names and birthplaces, mother's maiden name
  • Proof of prior marriage dissolution if either party was married before
