Assumption Parish Marriage License Process

Both parties must appear in person at the Clerk of Court office to apply for a marriage license. There is no way to apply by mail or online. Both people need to be present, with their documents, at the same time. Do not go without everything on the required list or you will need to make a second trip.

Under R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued in Assumption Parish is valid for use in any parish in Louisiana. You do not have to hold your ceremony in Assumption Parish just because you got the license here. The license is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued. After 30 days, it expires and the process starts over.

Louisiana law requires a waiting period between the time the license is issued and when the ceremony can happen. Under R.S. 9:241, that wait is typically 24 to 72 hours. A judge can waive the wait in specific cases under R.S. 9:242. If you need to get married quickly, contact the clerk office to ask what steps are involved in requesting a waiver. Do not assume it will be granted automatically.

Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Those who are 16 or 17 need both parents present to give consent. No one under 16 may receive a marriage license in Louisiana.

Required documents include:

  • Valid photo ID for each applicant
  • Certified birth certificate for each person
  • Social Security numbers for both parties
  • Parents' names and birthplaces, including mother's maiden name
  • Proof of prior marriage dissolution if either person was previously married

Under R.S. 9:225, proof that any prior marriage ended is required before a new license can be issued. Bring a certified divorce decree or death certificate if you have been married before.

The Assumption Parish Clerk of Court participates in eClerksLA, the statewide online portal for Louisiana clerk records. Through this system, you can access marriage license records from Assumption Parish 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The portal also allows for eRecording, eFiling, and eClerks Alert notifications, making it a full-service tool for anyone who works with parish records regularly.

Online marriage license applications are available through eClerksLA as well. That means you can start the process before your in-person visit. Filling out the worksheet online does not replace the in-person appearance requirement, but it can save time at the office when you arrive.

The Louisiana Clerks Remote Access Authority portal is another option. It provides a statewide index of court records from parish clerks across Louisiana. Assumption Parish records appear in this system. If you are not sure which parish holds a specific record, searching this portal first can point you in the right direction.

Historical Assumption Parish Marriage Records

The Assumption Parish Clerk of Court archive holds records going back to the 1700s. That makes it one of the older public record collections in Louisiana. Genealogical researchers often visit or contact this office when tracing family histories that go back many generations. The depth of the archive is remarkable for a parish of this size.

For older records not yet digitized, an in-person visit to Napoleonville is often the best approach. Staff can help locate documents in the physical archive. For records from 1946 onward, the Louisiana Department of Health also holds certified marriage certificates. Those certificates are shorter documents that confirm a marriage took place but do not have the full license application details.

The Louisiana State Archives is another resource for historical Assumption Parish records. The archives hold documents from many Louisiana parishes and may have older marriage records that complement what the clerk's office keeps. If your search involves records from the 1800s or early 1900s, the state archives are worth checking.
