Getting a Marriage License in Lafourche Parish

The marriage license fee in Lafourche Parish is $32.00 cash only. That price includes one certified copy, which is mailed to you after the signed copies from the ceremony are returned to the Clerk's office. Do not bring a card. Bring cash. There is a 24-hour waiting period before the license can be used for a ceremony, and the license expires 30 days from the application date.

A marriage license purchased in Louisiana must be used in Louisiana. It is not valid in other states. Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, the license is valid statewide, so you can get it in Lafourche Parish even if your ceremony is elsewhere in Louisiana. Under R.S. 9:241, the 24-hour waiting period begins at the time of issuance.

Both parties need to bring a certified copy of their birth certificate. A regular copy will not work. If either applicant does not have a birth certificate, an Order waiving the birth certificate is required, along with a letter from the proper registration authority stating that a search was made and no birth record was found. The clerk can tell you more about this process if it applies to you.

If either applicant was born outside of the United States, additional documents are required: a certified copy of the birth certificate accompanied by either a valid and unexpired passport or an unexpired visa with Form I-94. Have all documents ready before your visit to avoid delays.

Louisiana Marriage Records and State Resources

Several state-level resources can help when searching for marriage records in Lafourche Parish or other Louisiana parishes.

The Louisiana State Archives holds historical vital records and older documents from across the state. If you are searching for a marriage from several decades back, the archives may have materials that are not available through eClerksLA. Their collection reaches back to the 1800s in many parishes.

The Louisiana Department of Health issues certified marriage certificates for events after 1946. These shorter documents confirm that a marriage took place but do not include the full license application details. For the complete record, the Clerk of Court in Thibodaux is the source to use.

Note: If you need a marriage record for legal purposes, confirm with the requesting agency whether a certified copy from the Clerk of Court or a certificate from the health department is the required document.
