Getting a Marriage License in Iberia Parish

Iberia Parish follows applicable Louisiana statutes on who must appear in person. Under those rules, only one party is required to come in to purchase the marriage license. This is different from some other parishes where both must appear at the same time. That said, both parties must still sign the application, so confirm the current procedure with the office before your visit at (337) 369-4402.

The fee in Iberia Parish is $35.00. This covers both the application and a certified copy of the marriage license. You pay once and walk out with the license and a certified copy in hand. Payment is accepted by cash, check, money order, or debit and credit card. Additional certified copies cost $6.00 each if you need more than the one included with the application fee.

Iberia Parish has a 24-hour waiting period before the ceremony can take place. The license is valid for 30 days from the date and time it is issued, not just the date. If a couple needs to be married within the 24-hour waiting period, a waiver signed by a judge must be presented before the ceremony. That waiver is not automatic. You must seek it out in advance if you need to get married sooner than the waiting period allows.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued in any Louisiana parish is valid across the entire state. You can get your license in Iberia Parish and use it for a ceremony anywhere in Louisiana. Under R.S. 9:241, the 24-hour waiting period begins from the time the license is issued, not from midnight of the issue date. Watch the time, not just the date.

Note: The license expires 30 days from the date AND time of issuance. A license issued at 10:00 a.m. on March 1 expires at 10:00 a.m. on March 31.

Documents Needed for Iberia Parish Marriage Records

Having everything ready before you go saves time and avoids a return trip. The clerk cannot issue the license without all required documents. Here is what each applicant needs to bring.

Both parties need a valid government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license or a state-issued ID card. Each person also needs a certified birth certificate with the official seal from the issuing authority. A photocopy will not work. Social Security numbers are required for both parties. The clerk also asks for both parents' full names and birthplaces and each mother's maiden name. Have these details written down before you go so you are not searching your memory at the counter.

If either applicant was previously married, Louisiana law under R.S. 9:225 requires proof the prior marriage ended. A certified divorce decree or the death certificate of the former spouse is required. Only the certified version with an official seal is accepted. This rule applies regardless of whether the prior marriage ended by divorce or by the death of the former spouse. Do not skip this step if it applies to you.

For applicants between 16 and 17 years old, both parents must consent to the marriage. They can do this by appearing in person or by submitting notarized written consent. No one under 16 can get a marriage license in Louisiana.
