Kenner Marriage License Process

Getting a marriage license in Kenner follows the same process as the rest of Jefferson Parish. Both parties do not need to appear in person at the same time. Jefferson Parish allows one party to apply, which is a bit different from some other parishes. Check with the clerk before your visit to confirm the current requirement.

The fee is $27.50 for the license. If you also want a certified copy at the time of application, that costs an additional $10.00. The waiting period waiver, if a judge approves it, costs $4.00. These fees are set by Jefferson Parish and may differ from what other parishes charge.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued by Jefferson Parish is valid statewide. You can get your license in Jefferson Parish and use it for a ceremony held anywhere in Louisiana. The license is good for 30 days from the date and time it is issued. After 30 days it expires, and you have to start over.

The standard waiting period under R.S. 9:241 is 72 hours between when the license is issued and when the ceremony can take place. Jefferson Parish offers a waiting period waiver for a $4.00 fee, which a judge must approve. This is one of the more flexible parishes in Louisiana on this point. If you need to move quickly, ask the clerk about the waiver option when you apply.

Jefferson Parish also has an online application option. You can start the process at home before going to the courthouse. The City of Kenner website has general city information, but for marriage licensing, the Jefferson Parish Clerk is the right place to go.

Note: Your license is valid only for ceremonies performed in Louisiana, not in other states.

Required Documents for Kenner Marriage Records

Have all your documents ready before you visit the Jefferson Parish Clerk. Missing paperwork means a wasted trip. The clerk cannot issue the license until everything checks out.

Each applicant needs a valid government photo ID, a certified birth certificate, and their Social Security number. You also need to provide the full names and birthplaces of both parents, including the mother's maiden name. A regular photocopy of a birth certificate is not acceptable. It must be the certified version with an official seal or raised stamp.

If either person has been married before, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified copy of the divorce decree or the death certificate of a former spouse satisfies this requirement. Louisiana law under R.S. 9:225 requires this documentation before a new license can be issued. Bring the certified copy, not a regular printout.

Louisiana Marriage Records Resources

If the Jefferson Parish Clerk does not have what you need, these state resources may help.

The LCRAA portal provides statewide clerk of court records access. Marriage records from Jefferson Parish are indexed here alongside records from other parishes. If you are researching a record and not sure which parish it falls under, this is a useful place to start.

The Louisiana State Archives holds historical vital records, including older marriage documents from Jefferson Parish. For records going back many decades, the archives may be the best source when the parish clerk no longer holds the original files.

The Louisiana Department of Health issues certified marriage certificates for events recorded after 1946. A health department certificate is a shorter document than the full clerk record, but it is useful for legal and administrative purposes when you need to prove a marriage took place. For full license details, the clerk is the right source.

Note: Jefferson Parish is one of the larger parishes in Louisiana, so record volumes are high. Online searches may not capture every older record. Contact the clerk for anything you cannot find through online portals.
