Marriage License Process for Terrytown Residents

Both parties must show up in person at the West Bank Clerk of Court office. You cannot complete the application remotely. Both people need to be there at the same time. Bring all documents with you on that visit to avoid coming back.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, a Jefferson Parish marriage license is valid anywhere in Louisiana for 30 days from the date it is issued. You can hold your ceremony anywhere in the state, not just in Jefferson Parish or on the West Bank. If the license expires before you use it, you have to start a new application.

A 72-hour waiting period applies under R.S. 9:241. The 72 hours starts from the moment the license is issued. You cannot hold the ceremony until that time passes. Under R.S. 9:242, a judge can waive the waiting period in specific cases. A 24-hour waiver is available for a fee of $4.00. Ask the clerk's office for details on how to request one.

The marriage license fee in Jefferson Parish is $27.50. A certified copy costs $10.00. The waiver fee is an additional $4.00 per waiver if you need it. Jefferson Parish accepts multiple payment types, so ask the office what they currently take when you call ahead.

What to Bring to the West Bank Clerk Office

Each applicant needs a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state-issued ID, or passport all qualify. Certified birth certificates for both people are required. Plain copies will not be accepted. The certificate must come directly from the vital records office that issued it.

Both parties must supply their Social Security numbers. Parent information is also collected as part of the application. This includes the full names, birthplaces, and mother's maiden names for each applicant's parents.

If either person was previously married, proof of how the prior marriage ended is required. Bring a certified divorce decree or the death certificate of a former spouse. Louisiana law under R.S. 9:225 mandates this documentation before a new license can be issued. This step is not optional.

Note: No one under 16 may receive a marriage license in Louisiana. Applicants aged 16 to 17 need parental signature and both parents present or notarized consent.
