Getting a Marriage License in Livingston Parish

The fee for a standard marriage license in Livingston Parish is $31.00, payable by cash or credit/debit card. The office accepts both payment methods, which is more flexible than some other parishes. Bring the exact amount in cash or have your card ready.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, "a marriage license may be issued in any parish, regardless of where the ceremony is to be performed or where the parties reside. However, the ceremony must take place in the State of Louisiana." That means you can get your license in Livingston Parish even if you live elsewhere, as long as you marry in Louisiana. The license is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued.

Livingston Parish has a 24-hour waiting period under R.S. 9:241. The waiting period starts when the license is issued, not when you apply. You cannot get married the same day you pick up the license. Plan your ceremony date with this in mind.

One important note specific to Livingston Parish: only the appearing party needs to sign the application. If one party cannot be present for any reason, check with the Clerk's office for guidance on how to handle that situation. Standard Louisiana law requires both parties to apply, but the office can clarify current local procedures.

Note: The Covenant Marriage option is available in Livingston Parish for a fee of $36.00. A Covenant Marriage comes with additional legal commitments that limit grounds for divorce or separation.

Livingston Parish Marriage License Requirements

Both applicants must bring valid photo identification. A driver's license or state-issued ID card works for most applicants. You also need a certified birth certificate for each person. A photocopy is not enough. It must be an official certified copy from the issuing state.

Each applicant needs to provide their Social Security number. You will also need both parents' names and birthplaces, and the mother's maiden name for each person applying. This information is part of the standard Louisiana marriage license application and cannot be skipped.

If either party was previously married, bring documentation that the prior marriage ended. A certified copy of the divorce decree or a death certificate for a former spouse is required. Louisiana law makes this a firm requirement before a new license can be issued. Do not show up without this if it applies to you.
