Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court

The Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court operates from two locations. The main office is in Amite, the parish seat, and a second office is in Hammond, which is the largest city in the parish. Both offices accept marriage license applications. That makes it easier for residents on different sides of the parish to access records without a long drive.

The Amite office is at P.O. Box 667, Amite, LA 70422. The phone number there is (985) 748-4146. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are applying for a marriage license in Amite, plan to arrive by 4:00 p.m. to ensure you have enough time to complete the process.

The Hammond office is at 310 E. Oak Street, Hammond, LA 70401. The main phone is (985) 549-1638, and the Marriage Department can be reached directly at (985) 284-2670. Getting a Tangipahoa Parish Marriage License

Marriage license applications are accepted at both the Amite and Hammond offices of the Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Court. Both parties must appear in person. You cannot apply by mail or have a representative go in your place. Both people need to show up at the same time and bring all required documents.

Under Louisiana law at R.S. 9:222, a marriage license issued in Louisiana can be used anywhere in the state, no matter where the couple lives or where the ceremony will happen. So you can get your license at the Hammond office even if you live in another parish, as long as the ceremony will take place in Louisiana. The license expires after 30 days from the date it is issued, per state law under R.S. 9:241.

A 24-hour waiting period applies. You must wait at least one full day after the license is issued before the ceremony can take place. Budget that into your plans. If you are getting married on a Saturday, apply no later than Thursday to be safe.

The fee is $35.00, which includes a certified copy of the marriage record. In the Amite office, you can pay by cash, check, or credit card. The Hammond office accepts check or credit card only. No cash is taken at the Hammond location. Bring a check or card if you are going to Hammond.

No marriage license will be issued to anyone under the age of 16. Louisiana law is firm on this. Both applicants must be at least 18, and the application must be complete in all required fields.

Note: The Hammond office does not accept cash. Bring a check or credit card if applying at the Hammond location.

Documents Required for Tangipahoa Marriage Records

Both applicants must bring the right documents. Missing even one item will delay the process. Check this list before heading to either the Amite or Hammond office.

Each applicant must have a valid government-issued photo ID and an original or certified copy of their birth certificate. A photocopy is not acceptable. The birth certificate must be an official certified copy from the state where the applicant was born. Social Security numbers are required for both parties. The application also asks for both parents' names and birthplaces and the mother's maiden name for each applicant.

If either person was previously married, you must provide proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified copy of the final divorce decree works, or a certified death certificate if the former spouse is deceased. Under applicable Louisiana statutes, this documentation is required before a new license can be issued. Do not skip this step. The clerk cannot issue the license without it.

Applicants must complete all required fields on the application form before the license can be issued. The clerk will review the form and ask for any missing information. It is faster to come with everything complete.

Search Tangipahoa Parish Marriage Records Online

You can search Tangipahoa Parish marriage records through eClerksLA, the statewide online records portal for Louisiana clerks of court. The system is free and accessible around the clock. You can look up marriage license records by name, date range, or record type without making a trip to either office.

This is useful if you need basic record information quickly or are searching from out of town. For certified copies, you need to contact the clerk's office directly by phone or in person.

Louisiana State Marriage Record Resources

Several state-level sources may help if you need Tangipahoa Parish marriage records that predate the online portals or if you need a different type of certified document.

The Louisiana Clerks Remote Access Authority (LCRAA) portal gives statewide access to court records from parish clerks. Marriage indexes from Tangipahoa Parish may appear there. LCRAA is a good fallback if eClerksLA does not have what you need.

The Louisiana State Archives holds older marriage records for many parishes. If the marriage you are researching took place many decades ago, the archives may have it when the online portals do not. Their collection includes microfilmed records and some digitized documents from the 1800s and early 1900s.

The Louisiana Department of Health issues certified marriage certificates for events recorded after 1946. That certificate is shorter than the full Clerk of Court record. It confirms the event but does not include the full application data. Know which document you need before you order one.

Note: The $35.00 fee at both Tangipahoa offices includes a certified copy mailed after the ceremony, so you do not need to request one separately after you marry.
